Giovanna, a working-class Roman woman, finds that her endangered marriage only worsens when her husband brings home a confused old man. Her annoyance gives way to curiosity and caring as she seeks to discover the man's identity. As the mystery of the man's past unravels, and as Giovanna discovers that her longing for a handsome neighbor is mutual, she faces her need to make difficult choices about her dead-end life.
