Free event at the Jewish Community Library / 1835 Ellis Street, San Francisco
Charming Hostess, the Bay Area’s favorite nerdy-sexy-commie girl group, returns to the library with a spring program. Jewlia and Cynthia will sing non-traditional Passover songs and look at the connections between Sephardic women’s music and Marian hymns.
Charming Hostess makes music at the intersection of voice, text, and diaspora consciousness. Its recordings on Tzadik’s Radical Jewish Culture label include The Bowls Project, about Babylonian amulets, and Trilectic, on the political-erotic world of Walter Benjamin. Charming Hostess is at work on Queer Piyut, gender-diverse expressions of Jewish devotional music, and The Ginzburg Geography, a performance installation based on the lives of Natalia and Leone Ginzburg. You can find the band at www.charminghostess.com.
Program made possible, in part, by Anne Germanacos.
