In Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, journalist Isabel Wilkerson weaves together stories of the violence and oppression faced by Black people—the Jim Crow South’s lowest caste—throughout American history and up to the present day, with the brutalities of the caste systems in India and Nazi Germany. She also explores the psychology of how, why, and at what cost dominant castes seek to perpetuate caste systems, and describes the ongoing challenges that these systems pose to people of all castes.
