Defying categorization, The Periodic Table is a pioneering work in its creative approach to memoir. Levi, who was a chemist by profession, used the elements as a frame for stories of his life in the Jewish community of Turin, his brief career with the Partisans, and his experiences during and after the War. In 2006, the Royal Institution of Great Britain named The Periodic Table the greatest science book ever written.
